Nairn NA07: Sawmill Expansion

Figure 1: Map 31, Inner Moray Firth Local Development Plan 2, page 278, issued for consultation 25th March 2023

Nairn NA07: Sawmill Expansion is an industrial zone, comprising 4.8ha or thereby to fully accommodate expansion of the Sawmill. Reference NA07: Sawmill Expansion, Inner Moray Firth Local Development Plan 2, page 283, published for consultation 25th March 2023.

Creating this enlarged area for the Sawmill Expansion safeguards and ensures sustainable employment in Nairnshire for the long term. The development of the site does require the assessment of impact upon the road network, and on supporting an “enhancement of active travel connections to the town centre”. 1. Lack of road access is the main problem – will need whole new access road from the NEW BYPASS, let alone from A96.

  2. We welcome local business expansion, creating new jobs and securing a sustainable business.
Road access to the Sawmill has and will always be an issue. This proposed land is Prime to the centre of Nairn. The LLP must consider a future town connected to its South side, pathway networks and road access.

A logical location for connecting to the south side is via an extension to Duncan drive by a road crossing across the railway line. Designation of all of the proposed land to sawmill expansion will preclude this option forever.
Creating a 10minutes town needs to give careful consideration to what happens in this location. Connection to any south side developments should be thought through.
Creation of a walking/cycle networked matrix in and around Nairn must be given careful thought.
Creation of industrial /commercial and retail developments in a future Nairn must be given careful consideration.

In this case I think Nice should be sharing some of their thoughts on what they see the future town looking like, including a by-pass and potential future housing developments, our thoughts on designation of these areas for sawmill expansion should also include a brief on what exactly sawmill expansion means.
